Trogir : Unesco

trogir04.JPG (24610 bytes) Croatian culture is an integral part of Western European culture; indeed it is at the Eastern outpost. However, Croatia is unique in Europe; four cultures meet here: the West meets the East, and Central Europe meets the Mediterranean South. This is reflected in some of the historical monuments, which unite all these influences.

Trogir was founded by Greek colonisers, traders originating from Issa (Vis) during the 3rd century BC, by the name of Trogurion, meaning "Goats Village." It was known to Romans under the same name.

The past remembers Trogir as one of the vital cultural centres of Dalmatia. In the middle ages, Trogir and its surroundings were royal possessions of the Croatian rulers. Trogir has changed hands quite often in the course of its turbulent history.

Trogir is situated between the mainland and the island of Ciovo and connected by a drawbridge.

Towns are more numerous in Croatia than in any other part of Southeastern Europe. Most of these towns were founded in ancient or medieval times, and each town has its unique personality, a unique touch of the era.
