Trogir was founded by Greek colonisers, traders
originating from Issa (Vis) during the 3rd
century BC, by the name of Trogurion, meaning
"Goats Village." It was known to
Romans under the same name.
The past remembers Trogir as one of the vital
cultural centres of Dalmatia. In the middle
ages, Trogir and its surroundings were royal
possessions of the Croatian rulers. Trogir
has changed hands quite often in the course
of its turbulent history.
Trogir is situated between the mainland and
the island of Ciovo and connected by a drawbridge. |
